Green River Rye Review

Green River is one of those names bourbon nearly lost for good. Founded in 1885 by J.W. McCulloch in Owensboro, it grew into one of the most heavily advertised whiskeys in the world, “The Whiskey Without a Headache,” back when that line counted as marketing. Then a 1918 fire took the distillery and some 40,000 barrels with it, Prohibition finished the job, and the brand spent most of a century as a footnote.

The revival started when a company bought the dilapidated Owensboro site in 2014, poured millions into restoring it, and secured the rights to the old Green River name in 2020. The first whiskey under the revived brand landed in 2022. This rye, 95% rye and 5% malted barley bottled at 95 proof, is part of that second act, and at around $35 it's priced like a distillery that still remembers it has something to prove.

First Impression

Apple opens it, crisp and orchard-fresh, before butterscotch rolls in and coats everything in something warmer. Toasted oak wraps the whole thing — present but not pushy, the kind of restraint you don't always get at this price.

On the Palate

Caramel arrives first and settles in sweet, then ginger flares through the middle with a bright, peppery heat. Clove follows close behind it, and between the two the rye finally announces itself after letting the sweetness lead for a beat longer than you'd expect.

The Last Sip

The finish turns buttery and rich before tobacco leaf drifts across it, dry and faintly sweet. Charred oak underneath carries it out, hanging on longer than 95 proof has any business doing.

Final Thoughts

This one was an excellent ride from start to finish. The sweet notes lead up front, and just when you settle in, the spice hits the back palate to remind you it's a rye, not a soft, rounded-off pour trying to pass for a bourbon.

At $35, from a distillery clawing its way back after more than a century of silence, it's an easy Buy. Good whiskey and a good story in the same bottle, which is exactly the kind of thing Green River was built on the first time around.
