Buffalo Trace Bourbon Review

Buffalo Trace is one of the first bottles I remember seeing early in my bourbon journey. Living in Texas, it was just a shelfer. It never crossed my mind that it was something I needed to try. Not because I thought I was above it or anything like that. After all, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond and Early Times Bottled in Bond are still among my favorite everyday pours, especially the old Brown-Forman version of Early Times. As most bourbon fans know, the Sazerac release just doesn't quite hit the same. It's not bad by any means, and if you never had the original, you'll probably never notice the difference.

Buffalo Trace itself has one of the longest continuous whiskey-making histories in America. The distillery traces its roots back to the late 1700s, when travelers and herds of buffalo carved paths across the Kentucky frontier to the banks of the Kentucky River. Those "buffalo traces" eventually inspired both the distillery's modern name and the bourbon that represents it today. While the site has changed hands over the centuries, the whiskey has remained rooted in tradition, earning a reputation as one of the benchmark everyday bourbons in the category.

Back to the bottle. Buffalo Trace is something I do keep on my bar, although it's usually a store pick just to make things a little more interesting. That isn't the case for this review, though. I've never really liked reviewing store picks because they're ultimately a reflection of the person or team that selected the barrel. Sometimes they're close to the standard profile, and sometimes they're completely different—and if that's exactly why you love a particular pick, my review isn't going to tell you much. I'd rather review the bottle anyone has a reasonable chance of buying.

The Last Sip: Baking spices linger alongside dried apricot before fading into charred oak.

Final Thoughts

If you're looking for a bourbon that's consistent from bottle to bottle and, dare I say, an easy sipper, Buffalo Trace is hard to beat. It's the kind of bottle you can keep on the shelf knowing exactly what you're going to get every time. I've never mixed it into a cocktail myself, but I have no doubt it'd make a great Bourbon & Coke at your next backyard BBQ. 🟢 Buy
